At some point, while Bates was posing for the flashing cameras on the carpet, she was joined by fellow co-star Skye P. Marshall, who features alongside Bates in an upcoming reboot of “Matlock.”

Aside from discussing the “Matlock” reboot and her retirement, which she has reportedly reneged on, Bates divulged some details about her weight and health journey.

The talented actress, who is playing the lead for the first time in six years with her new role in “Matlock,” spoke about how losing weight has been extremely beneficial for her, especially when it comes to her craft.

“It’s helped me tremendously that, over the last six or seven years, I’ve lost 100 pounds. I don’t think I’ve been this slim since I was in college,” revealed the “American Horror Story” actress.

Bates was at her heaviest in 2011 when she starred in NBC’s “Harry’s Law.” Reflecting on that time, she shared, “I had to sit down every moment that I could. It was hard for me to walk. I’m ashamed I let myself get so out of shape.”

However, like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Bates was able to get into better shape. She added, “[But] now I have a tremendous amount of energy.”

Years before her 2024 Variety interview, Bates spoke with Extra to discuss her then-60-pound weight loss in 2019. At the time, the then-70-year-old asserted, “This is the best health I’ve been in in years and I’m so grateful — it’s a miracle.”

Bates then disclosed, “Well, I was facing diabetes — it runs in my family — and I really didn’t want to live with that.”

Using a tip she had learned from her niece about listening to the communication between one’s brain and stomach when eating, Bates menioned, “After you eat for 20-30 minutes, you experience an involuntary sigh […] what I discovered is if you listen to that sigh and push that plate away for just five minutes, you realize you’re satisfied.”

Further along in the discussion, Bates also spoke about how her weight loss had helped ease her lymphedema symptoms. In addition to her lymphedema, Bates was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2003 and then breast cancer.
